Red-rumped Cacique (Cacicus haemorrhous)

 

 

Cacicus haemorrhous occurs in the tropical South America, including the Amazon, the Guianas, eastern and south-eastern Brazil, Paraguay, and north-eastern Argentina. It inhabits tropical and subtropical moist forests, gallery forests, swamps, secondary forests, and plantations; mostly in lowlands, but up to 1,000 m in the Andean foothills. A relatively large black icterid (length 23-29 cm; weight 65-97 g) with a long, tapered pale yellow or ivory bill, a bright red rump, and black legs. The iris is blue. Red-rumped Cacique nests in colonies, often along the forest edge, and generally during the rainy season. The nest is pouch-shaped and pendulous, 40-70 cm long, build by female from plant fiber. It could be placed high in trees or palms, or relatively low if above water. The clutch contains 2-3 eggs. Apparently may raise 2-3 litters a year. C. haemorrhous generally forages in the forest canopy taking insects and other invertebrates, small vertebrates, fruit and nectar.
